What we do

US Top VPNs is an independent consumer guide to virtual private networks. We test VPN services in controlled conditions, rank them based on speed, streaming unlock rate, privacy audit history, and value, and recommend the ones that are worth US readers' money. We do not review every VPN on the market — we review the ones a typical US reader might reasonably consider.

Editorial independence

We earn a commission when readers subscribe to a VPN through links on this site. This is the entire business model, and we think the model works only if our rankings are credible. To that end:

• Our rankings are based on our own testing, not on affiliate payouts. The VPN that pays us the most is not automatically ranked first.
• Every VPN we rank must pass a minimum bar: an independently audited no-logs policy or equivalent transparency, a kill switch that works on major platforms, and a money-back guarantee.
• We re-test our top five every quarter and refresh this site within 30 days of a major change (protocol rollout, audit, breach, ownership change).
• We do not accept sponsored reviews. No VPN company has paid to influence the ranking of any product on this site.

How we test

Every VPN on our top list has been tested on Windows 11, macOS 14, iOS 17, and Android 14, on a 1 Gbps symmetric fiber connection in the US Midwest. Speed tests are averaged across three runs per server and repeated weekly. Streaming tests are run from fresh browser profiles with cleared cookies and cache. Full methodology: How we rate.
