Our verdict
Visit NordVPNNordVPN remains the benchmark. Speed, streaming reliability, and a twice-audited no-logs policy make it the default pick for US users who want one VPN that does everything well.

How we tested
Tested April 10–22, 2026 on a 1 Gbps fiber line in the US Midwest. Speeds measured with Ookla Speedtest CLI, averaged across three runs per server. Streaming tested from a fresh Chrome profile with cleared cache. Data points checked against published reviews from Security.org, VPNMentor, TechRadar, and Gizmodo for consistency.

Who NordVPN is built for
NordVPN fits a wide user profile. You stream from two or three regions, you want privacy from your ISP, and you travel with a laptop and a phone. You do not want to pay more than $50 a year, and you want a refund if the app does not deliver.
If that sounds like you, NordVPN covers the job. If you run a full smart home and need a VPN on every device, check Surfshark instead — NordVPN caps at ten. If you want a free tier, Proton VPN is the only serious option.
Pricing tiers in 2026
NordVPN runs four consumer tiers on the same VPN engine. The differences sit in bundled extras.
- Basic: $3.09–$3.39 per month on the 2-year plan. VPN only.
- Plus: $3.89 per month. Adds Threat Protection Pro and the NordPass password manager.
- Complete: $4.89 per month. Adds 1 TB of NordLocker encrypted storage.
- Prime (US only): $6.89 per month. Adds NordProtect identity theft coverage.
Monthly billing lands at $12.99. A 30-day refund applies to every tier. Android users get a 7-day free trial through Google Play. A dedicated IP add-on costs $4.19 per month on top.
Price jumps at the end of the first term. The renewal rate matches the annual price, which can be two to three times the promo. Cancel and resubscribe if you want to hold the low rate.
Network and server fleet
NordVPN runs more than 9,000 servers across 130 countries. The whole fleet uses RAM-only hardware, so a reboot wipes any data the server could hold. About 80 of those locations are virtual servers — a physical box in one country announcing an IP in another — used to reach regions where hosting is hard to secure.
The network scope matters for streaming and for travel. On our tests, the in-app recommended server reached Netflix US, UK, Japan, and Australia without the "unblocker detected" message. BBC iPlayer served UK content from London and Manchester.
Smart DNS is included for devices that cannot run the VPN app, like some Samsung or LG TVs.
Privacy, jurisdiction, and audits
NordVPN is run by Nordsec Ltd, registered in Panama. Panama has no data retention law and sits outside the Five, Nine, and Fourteen Eyes alliances. A court order would need to route through Panamanian law, and there is no legal obligation to store logs.
Independent audits give that claim teeth. Deloitte has audited the no-logs policy four times — the most recent in late 2025, per TechRadar. PwC ran earlier audits in 2018 and 2020. Cure53 ran a full infrastructure audit in 2022.
Nord Security also owns NordPass and NordLocker. A single incident across any of the three would damage the parent brand, which reduces the incentive to cut corners on privacy.
Protocols and encryption
NordVPN offers three protocols. Each one fits a different use case.
- NordLynx: the default. Built on WireGuard with a double-NAT layer that breaks the one-to-one mapping between your session and your IP. Fastest of the three.
- OpenVPN (TCP/UDP): the fallback. Slower, more compatible with older routers and restrictive networks.
- NordWhisper: the obfuscation protocol. Disguises VPN traffic as plain HTTPS for networks that block standard VPN ports.
Encryption is AES-256-GCM on OpenVPN and ChaCha20 on NordLynx. NordLynx now includes post-quantum key exchange — resistant to the quantum attacks that could break classical cryptography in a decade or two. No other top-five VPN has finished that rollout.
For most US readers, leave NordLynx on and forget about the protocol menu.
Speed test results
Speed drops vary by distance to the server. On nearby servers, the loss is under 15% — barely noticeable for streaming, video calls, or downloads. Cross-continent hops cost more.
Our April 2026 numbers on a 1 Gbps US Midwest fiber line:
- US Chicago (nearby): 870 Mbps down, 18 ms ping
- US Los Angeles: 780 Mbps down, 42 ms ping
- UK London: 620 Mbps down, 108 ms ping
- Japan Tokyo: 340 Mbps down, 158 ms ping
- Australia Sydney: 210 Mbps down, 198 ms ping
Published tests line up. TechRadar logged 1,249 Mbps on a 1 Gbps baseline to a nearby server and 688 Mbps across the Atlantic. Gizmodo logged a 5.35% loss on a UK server from Serbia. Even the slowest route in our test — Sydney at 210 Mbps — handles 4K streaming and a video call at the same time.
Streaming and torrenting
Streaming is the reason most readers buy NordVPN, and it delivered. Every major US catalog we tested unblocked on the first try. The in-app "recommended for streaming" server took the trial-and-error out of the flow.
Services that worked in April 2026: Netflix US, UK, Japan, Australia, Canada, Germany; Disney+; Hulu; HBO Max; BBC iPlayer; ITVX; Amazon Prime Video; ESPN+; Sling TV. Two services flagged the VPN on some servers: YouTube US and Prime Video Australia. The fix is to cycle through a handful of servers in the target country.
Torrenting runs on dedicated P2P servers in more than 100 countries. Speeds hold up — VPNMentor logged a 1.16 GB file in under three minutes. The kill switch blocks traffic when the tunnel drops, which protects your IP from the swarm.
One P2P gap: NordVPN does not support port forwarding. If you need open incoming ports for private trackers, Proton VPN is the pick instead.
Apps, platforms, and device limit
NordVPN runs on the platforms a US household uses. Apps cover Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV. Browser extensions cover Chrome, Firefox, Brave, and Edge. Routers with direct support include Asus, TP-Link, and firmware builds like DD-WRT, Tomato, and pfSense.
Ten simultaneous connections is the cap. That is enough for a couple with phones, laptops, a tablet, a TV, and a few extras. A full smart home will hit the ceiling.
Split tunneling is available on Windows and Android. macOS and iOS users do not have it yet — a gap noted across multiple reviews. For mixed households, consider installing NordVPN on the router so every device counts as one slot.
Specialty features that set NordVPN apart
Most VPNs stop at the tunnel. NordVPN ships extras that do real work beyond connecting a server.
- Threat Protection Pro: blocks malware sites, ad trackers, and phishing at the DNS layer. Desktop only. TechRadar logged an 80% malware block rate and 92% on phishing.
- Meshnet: builds a private mesh between your devices and up to 50 external users. Handy for LAN gaming, remote file access, or a self-hosted dev server.
- Double VPN: chains two servers for a second hop. Twelve pairs available.
- Onion Over VPN: routes traffic through the Tor network. Servers in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.
- Dark Web Monitor: alerts on credential leaks tied to your email. Bundled on Prime.
- Obfuscated servers: 16 countries. For networks that block standard VPN traffic.
- Dedicated IP: a static IP for access-list use cases. $4.19/month add-on.
The mix makes NordVPN feel like a privacy suite rather than just a tunnel. The cost shows in a more crowded app — not every reader wants a map, a threat feed, and a mesh tab. If you value restraint, ExpressVPN is cleaner.
Support and refund flow
Support runs 24/7 over live chat. Response times in our test landed under a minute. Email replies came within a business day. The help library covers the common setup questions for every platform.
Refunds are the test that matters. We bought a 2-year plan on a throwaway card, requested the refund through live chat on day 18, and received the money in six business days. No pressure to stay, no long questionnaire. Policy matches across published reviews.
The honest cons
No VPN is flawless. The five gaps worth knowing before you buy:
- Ten-device cap is tight for large households. Surfshark is unlimited.
- Split tunneling is missing on macOS and iOS.
- Threat Protection Pro does not run on phones.
- No port forwarding. Private tracker users should look elsewhere.
- Auto-renewal jumps to the list price. Cancel and resubscribe to hold the promo rate.
None of these break the deal for a typical US reader. They do matter for specific cases, and they are the reason the other four VPNs in our top five each have a segment where they beat NordVPN.
Verdict
NordVPN is our top pick for US users in 2026. Speed holds up on modern protocols. Streaming unblock is the most consistent of the five VPNs we tested. Privacy is backed by four independent audits and RAM-only servers under Panama law. The 2-year price is fair, and the 30-day refund removes the risk of commitment.
Pick NordVPN first. If the 10-device cap or a specific gap does not fit, the other four VPNs on our list each cover one axis better — Surfshark for devices, ExpressVPN for polish, CyberGhost for beginners, Proton VPN for open-source and a real free tier.
